At 5:22 PM on 15 December 2017, Skippy the betta fish was pronounced dead. Skippy’s owner, Stephanie Mitchell, acquired the blue fish at Petco in the Fall of 2016 and cared for him in her Skidmore College apartment.
The death occurred when Mitchel drove home from Saratoga for winter break. Skippy’s bowl had been placed in the backseat of her car, where she had neglected to fasten a seat belt around the betta fish. Upon hitting a deer on the highway, Mitchell’s car halted, sending Skippy flying through the air.
The deer survived; Skippy did not.
The blue betta fish will be remembered for his vibrant hue and keen listening skills. Mitchell referred to Skippy as “the only one who understands her.” He will be missed dearly.
Friends and family can pay their respects at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Westchester during this coming Monday’s service. Skippy will be buried in the adjacent cemetery along with various components of his fishbowl: Spongebob’s pineapple, a wrecked ship, and a handful of neon colored rocks. We send thoughts and prayers to Skippy’s family and hope they remain strong throughout this difficult time.
